Dempsey Indoor, the $28 million athletic practice facility east of Husky Stadium, opens its doors Sept. 8 for the Husky Fever Brunch prior to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Michigan football game. The 95,000-square-foot space holds a 100-yard football field plus a four-lane, 1/5 mile track. Football fans can see the facility during "Husky Huddles," held three hours prior to every home football game except the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Michigan contest. The names of 585 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ students, alumni, faculty and staff who gave their lives in World War II are etched in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ's World War II Memorial, "Interrupted Journey," located at the base of the flagpole on Memorial Way on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ campus. Names of the fallen were gathered from state records, the Benaroya Memorial Plaza list, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ alumni publications, fraternities, high school alumni newsletters and personal letters. The project was conceived in 1995 at the combined 50-year reunion of the classes of 1944, 1945 and 1946 called "The War Years Reunion." Brewster Denny, '45, former dean of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ School of Public Affairs and World War II veteran, chaired the World War II Memorial Committee. The memorial, designed and built by Seattle artist Jon Gierlich, was dedicated in May.
