FEATURED HUSKIES FROM THE 37TH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT

Assunta Ng is the publisher of . The only weekly English-edition newspaper serving Washington’s Asian and Pacific Islander communities, the paper's goal is to empower the Asian community. "I still write because I’m a role model for immigrants."
Assunta NgÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ '74, '76 & '79,
In 2017, Sharon Maeda came out of retirement to create a local radio station from the ground up. The station — Rainier Valley Radio/KVRU 105.7 FM — gives the diverse Rainier Valley community a voice and access to information. “The reason I was willing to come out of retirement and take this job was because of all this business of fake news and all that’s going on in the country and the world. A lot of people in the Rainier Valley are either on the no-fly list or they’re Dreamers who are worried about their status … It’s really important that people in this community have a voice.

"As a Queer, Chamoru social work scholar from the Island of GuÃ¥han, I have spent the last 13-years at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ championing Pasifika communities and the rich stories and histories that shape them. Though I am currently a doctoral candidate at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ School of Social Work, this is my third degree at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, which has provided over a decade of enriching experiences as a triple dawg and deep relationships with our local Pasifika communities that inform my work as scholar and leader. As I continue my journey as a recipient of the Husky 100, I am dedicated to serving Washington’s Queer and Transgender Pacific Islander and broader Pasifika communities as a leader, cultural practitioner, researcher, and social worker who uplifts our communities’ dreams and stories to create a more socially just world for future generations."

"Throughout my editorship with the Daily, internship for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Sustainability, and mentorship within my program, design has defined my experience at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. Conversely, this experience has helped me realize design’s effectiveness comes from the ability to craft with intention, empathy, and imagination in a way that is accessible to all. I’m fascinated by the ways design can be used to communicate on an innately human level, and how this connection can be used to build more sustainable futures that value diverse ways of thinking."

"Growing up Somali, I’ve always been inspired by the emphasis on mutual aid within my culture. At the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, this admiration has transformed into an unshakeable belief in the power of collective action. That belief is reflected in my work to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering through outreach. As I continue my journey, I am committed to community-centered work grounded in the conviction that meaningful, lasting change for marginalized communities can only be built by the people who have lived its absence."
